UASCH Community Response

The Urban Assembly School for Collaborative Healthcare prides itself on equity, inclusion, and love. Our community is appalled at the murder of George Floyd and countless others before him. We recognize that conversations about race can be challenging and complex, but silence is deafening and it makes us culpable for maintaining the status quo.

As educators of adolescents, we have an obligation to advocate for our students and their community. We pledge to make ourselves vulnerable to our students and acknowledge their experiences as young adults with diverse backgrounds. We will use our voices to tell our community that the recent heinous events are abhorrent and unjust. It is our responsibility as educators to eradicate this hate that is ingrained in the very fabric of our lives.

Our school community acknowledges and condemns the social constructs that stigmatize any and/or all of us and prevent our students from reaching their full potential. Furthermore, we condemn all systems that have led to inequality, injustice, and institutional racism, or that perpetuate violence or discrimination of any kind.

Each UASCH staff member commits to speaking truth to empower our students because they are beautiful and deserving and because silence is no longer an option. We commit to making them aware of their rights because they are smart, young, and free.  Our community commits to having these conversations continually, not just when violent events occur.

We challenge our colleagues to fight for change, in words and action.  By not acknowledging, condemning, and addressing systemic inequality, we are committing educational malpractice.
